Around 400 people attended the popular annual event organised by Wintringham Residents’ Association, with guests greeted with a warm welcome and traditional tokens of good fortune, including a fortune cookie, mandarin oranges and a red envelope — symbolising good luck, prosperity and happiness for the year ahead.

Following an opening speech, the celebrations began in spectacular style as the sound of drums and cymbals rang out across the hall, drawing the crowd together. The vibrant percussion marked the official start of the festivities, creating an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation.

A highlight of the afternoon was a spectacular performance from the Cambridge Chinese Lion Dance Team, who captivated the audience with a traditional Lion Dance and Tai Chi fan dance displays. Their performance brought energy, colour and movement to the celebration, reflecting the vitality and adventurous spirit associated with the Year of the Fire Horse.

Throughout the event, families enjoyed a wide range of cultural activities. Visitors tried their hand at Chinese calligraphy, crafted paper dragons and played traditional games including Chinese checkers, mahjong cards and balancing cups. A dressing-up area featuring an array of Chinese outfits proved popular with children and adults alike, while Chinese horoscope readings added an extra element of fun and insight.

Food lovers were also treated to authentic street food, including noodles and dumplings served from a food truck on the school plaza.

Scott Jenner, Chair of Wintringham Residents’ Association, said: “The Lunar New Year celebration was an amazing community event again this year, and it was wonderful to see so many neighbours joined by friends and family. I would like to give a special thank you to our incredible resident volunteers, who have helped plan this popular celebration again this year.

“This was my last event as Chair of the Residents’ Association, but I look forward to continuing to be an active part of this very special community and shall enjoy attending future events without the responsibility of oversight.”
